Hadith 101

Sayyida Rabi’ bint Mu’awwidh bin ‘Afra’ (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: We came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and a large vessel of water was placed before him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) washed the limbs of ablution three times each, and wiped his head twice.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
In the aforementioned hadith, it is stated that the head was wiped (masah) twice. In the narration from Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu, it is mentioned: "He wiped his head once" (Sahih Tirmidhi, no. 44; Sunan Ibn Majah, no. 456).
In the narration from Sayyiduna Uthman radi Allahu anhu, it is stated: "The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam wiped his head three times." (Sahih Abi Dawud, no. 101)
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah states: Imam Abu Dawud rahimahullah narrated this through two chains, one of which he declared authentic regarding the narration from Sayyiduna Uthman radi Allahu anhu about wiping the head three times, and (it should be noted that) the addition of a trustworthy narrator is accepted. (Fath al-Bari: 1/312)
Imam Shafi'i rahimahullah holds the view that wiping (masah) the head, like the other limbs, is recommended (mustahabb) to be done three times. (Kitab al-Umm: 1/26)
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah says: If the ahadith about wiping three times are authentic, their meaning would be that whoever wishes to wipe more may do so up to three times, and it does not mean that wiping three times is obligatory in every case. (Fath al-Bari: 1/399)
The preferred opinion is that in ablution (wudu), wiping the head once is obligatory, while doing so two or three times is Sunnah and recommended. And Allah knows best.
