Zayd bin Khalid al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that a man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked about a lost item (something found on the road). The Prophet ﷺ said: "Examine its pouch and its binding thoroughly, then announce it for one year. If its owner comes during that period, give it to him; otherwise, it becomes yours."

Ubaidullah bin Badr narrated that he traveled on the roads of Syria and found a pouch on the way in which there were eighty dinars. Then he mentioned this to Umar bin Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), so Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Announce it at the doors of the mosque, and inform everyone who comes from Syria for a year, and when a year has passed, then the pouch is yours.

It is narrated from Nafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man picked up something that had fallen on the road, then he came to Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and said: I have found a lost item, what should I do now? Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Announce it. He said: I have done so. Ibn Umar said: Do more. He said: I have done a lot. Then Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I do not permit you to eat such a thing; if you wished, you would not have picked it up.
