It is narrated from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) forbade Muzabana, and Muzabana is that dates on the tree are sold by measure in exchange for plucked dates, and grapes on the vine are sold by measure in exchange for dried grapes.

It is narrated from Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) or Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the sale of Muzabanah and Muhaqalah. Muzabanah is to buy the dates on the tree in exchange for plucked dates, and Muhaqalah is to rent land in exchange for wheat.

It is narrated from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forbade muzabanah and muhaqalah. Muzabanah is the name for buying the dates on a tree in exchange for dried dates, and muhaqalah is the name for buying wheat in its ear in exchange for cleaned wheat. Ibn Shihab (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I inquired about leasing land in exchange for dirhams and dinars, so Ibn al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) said: There is no harm in that.

It is narrated from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade mukhabarah, muhaqalah, and muzabanah. Muhaqalah is when a person sells wheat that is still in the ear for one hundred sa’ (a measure) of cleaned wheat. Muzabanah is when dates on the date-palm trees are sold for one hundred sa’ of dried dates. Mukhabarah is when land is given on sharecropping for a third or a fourth of the produce.

Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that we used to practice mukhabarah and did not see any harm in it, until Rafi‘ (may Allah be pleased with him) expressed the opinion that the Prophet (ﷺ) had forbidden it, so we abandoned it for that reason.
