Abu Ayyash Zaid narrated that he asked Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) about selling barley in exchange for wheat. Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him, “Which of the two is better?” He replied, “Wheat.” Then Sa’d forbade him and said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) being asked about selling dry dates for fresh dates. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Do fresh dates decrease after they become dry?’ The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) said, ‘Yes.’ So he (ﷺ) forbade that.”

It is narrated from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade the sale of date palm fruits until their ripeness became apparent, and likewise forbade the sale of dried dates in exchange for dried dates. Abdullah narrated that Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) informed us that the Prophet (peace be upon him) granted concession in the case of ‘Araya.

Ismail al-Shaybani or someone else narrated that I sold dates on the trees for one hundred wasq on the condition that if there were more, they would belong to the buyer, and if there were less (than one hundred wasq), the loss would also be on him. Then I asked Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) and he said that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forbade doing so, except that he (ﷺ) permitted it in the sale of ‘ariyya.

Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated from Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) granted concession to the owner of ‘Ariyyah to sell dates by estimation.

It is narrated from Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) permitted the sale of ‘Ariyyah for five wasqs or less than five wasqs. Dawud (may Allah have mercy on him) had a doubt, so he said: "Five wasqs or less than five wasqs."

Sahl bin Abi Hathmah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forbade selling dried dates for dried dates, but he permitted the sale of ‘Ariyyah, that they may be sold by estimation so that the owners of ‘Ariyyah may eat fresh dates in exchange for them.

It is narrated from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the sale of Muzabana, and Muzabana is that the dates on the tree are sold in exchange for dried dates. However, he (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted it in the case of 'Ariya.
