It is narrated from Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Do not sell gold for gold except equal for equal, and do not increase one over the other; and do not sell silver for silver except equal for equal, hand to hand, and do not increase one over the other; and do not sell something absent for something present among them."

It is narrated from Mujahid that Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Dinar is for dinar and dirham is for dirham; any increase in them is not permissible. This is the covenant of our Prophet (ﷺ) with us and our covenant with you.

It is narrated from Ata bin Yasar (may Allah have mercy on him) that Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) once sold a gold or silver vessel for more than its weight. So Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him, "I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) forbidding this." Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with it." So Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Who will excuse me regarding Muawiyah? I narrate to him the hadith of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and he tells me his own opinion. I will not stay in the land in which (O Muawiyah!) you reside."
