Ibn Abi Mulaykah reports that he asked Ibn Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them) about a man who gives his wife an irrevocable (bain) divorce and then dies while the woman is still in her waiting period (‘iddah). Abdullah ibn Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them) replied: Abdur Rahman ibn Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) gave Tamadir bint Asbagh Kalbiyyah an irrevocable divorce, then he died while she was still in her waiting period, so Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) made her an heir. Ibn Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them) said: As for me, I think that a woman who has been given an irrevocable divorce should not be made an heir.

Talha bin Abdur Rahman bin Awf narrated, and he was the most knowledgeable about this issue, and from Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman bin Awf, it is narrated that Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) gave his wife a final (irrevocable) divorce during his illness. So Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) made her an heir to his wealth after her waiting period had ended.
