Fari’ah bint Malik bin Sinan (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that she came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: “Send me to my parents’ house among Banu Khudrah, because her husband had gone out in search of his runaway slaves. When he reached the place of Qudum, the slaves killed him.” Fari’ah sought permission from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to go to her family home because her husband had not left any house of which he was the owner. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Yes (you may go).” When I returned to the room or the mosque, he (peace and blessings be upon him) called me or ordered that I be called, so I was summoned. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: “What did you say?” She says: Then I again narrated the incident of my husband, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Stay in your (husband’s) house until your waiting period (‘iddah) is complete.” She says: I observed the ‘iddah there for four months and ten days. She further says: When ‘Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was the caliph, he sent someone to me and inquired about this issue, so I informed him, and he judged accordingly.
