It is narrated from Abdu Khair that Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said regarding the man who married and died before consummation, and he had not fixed the dowry for his wife: the woman is entitled to a share of inheritance and must observe the waiting period (‘iddah), but she is not entitled to the dowry.

It is narrated from Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) that he relates regarding the daughter of 'Ubaydullah bin 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and her mother, the daughter of Zayd bin Khattab, that ('Ubaydullah bin 'Umar's daughter) was married to the son of 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and he passed away before consummation, and no dowry had been fixed for her. When her mother demanded the payment of the dowry for her, Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "There is no dowry for her, and if she were entitled to a dowry, we would not withhold it nor would we wrong this woman." Her mother refused to accept this, so they appointed Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) as the judge, and he ruled that there is no dowry for her, but she is entitled to inheritance.
