It is narrated from Abdullah bin Utbah that Sabi’ah bint Harith (may Allah be pleased with her) gave birth to a child a few days after the death of her husband. Abu Sanabil bin Ba’kak (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by her and said, “You have adorned yourself for marriage, while your waiting period (‘iddah) is four months and ten days.” Sabi’ah mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), so he (ﷺ) said: “Abu Sanabil has spoken incorrectly, or as Abu Sanabil said, the matter is not so. You have completed your ‘iddah, you may marry.”

Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman narrated that Ibn Abbas and Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with them) were asked about a pregnant woman whose husband passes away. Ibn Abbas said, "She must observe the longer of the two waiting periods." And Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "When she gives birth, her waiting period is over." Then Abu Salamah went to Umm al-Mu'mineen Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) and asked her about this issue. She said that Subai'ah al-Aslamiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) gave birth half a month after her husband's death. Two men sent her marriage proposals—one was young and the other was middle-aged. She sent a proposal to the young man. The middle-aged man said, "Your waiting period is not over yet," and her family was away. That man hoped that when her family returned, they would give him preference over the young man. When she came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), he said: "Your waiting period is over; you may marry whomever you wish."

Sulaiman said that Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) also arrived and said, "I am with my nephew, i.e., Abu Salamah (meaning my ruling is the same)." Finally, they sent Ibn Abbas’s freed slave, Kuraib, to Umm Salamah, and he asked her about this issue. Then he returned to them and reported that she said: Subai’ah (may Allah be pleased with her) gave birth to a child a few days after her husband’s death, and she mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), so he said to her: "Your waiting period is over, so you may marry."
