It is narrated from Nafi‘ (may Allah have mercy on him) that Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say: When a man gives his wife the authority to divorce, then the decision is as the woman makes, except if the man denies it and says, “I intended only one divorce (i.e., I gave her the authority for one divorce),” and he swears an oath to that effect. And the husband has more authority over her as long as she is in her ‘iddah (waiting period).

Kharijah bin Zaid (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated that he was sitting with Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) when Muhammad bin Abi Atiq came to them weeping. Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him, "What happened to you?" He replied, "I gave the woman the choice in her matter, so she separated herself from me." Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him, "Why did you do this?" He replied, "It was destined." Then Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him, "If you wish, you may take her back, because this is only one divorce, and you still have more authority over her."
