It is narrated from Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she stated: Three Sunnahs were established with Barirah (may Allah be pleased with her). One of them is that when she was set free, she was also given the choice regarding her husband (i.e., if she wished, she could maintain the marriage or annul it).

Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said regarding the slave woman who is married to a slave and her master sets her free: if her husband has not had intercourse with her, then she has a choice; but if he has had intercourse with her, then she has no choice.

It is narrated from Urwah bin Zubair (may Allah have mercy on him) that the freed slave woman of Banu Adi bin Ka'b, whose name was Zabra, informed him that she was married to a slave, and at that time she was a slave woman when her master set her free. She says that the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her), sent a message to her and called her, and said: "I am going to tell you something, and I do not like that you should do anything (hasty). That is, your matter is now in your own hands until your husband has intercourse with you." So she separated herself from her husband three times.

It is narrated from Urwah that the freed slave woman of Bani Adi, whose name was Zabra, informed him that when she was a slave, she was married to a slave man. Her master set her free. She says that Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her) sent for me with a message and said: "I am going to tell you something, and I do not want you to do anything (hasty), and that is: now your matter is in your own hands until your husband has intercourse with you." She says that he separated from her three times. Imam Shafi’i (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her) did not say to her that it is not permissible for you to give him three divorces.

It is narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when mention was made to him of the husband of Barirah (may Allah be pleased with her), he said: "He was Mughith, the slave of such-and-such tribe. It is as if I can still see him, weeping and walking behind her along the road."
