Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to say that whoever gives his slave permission to marry, then the right of divorce belongs only to the slave; no one other than the slave has the right of divorce.

It is narrated from Muhammad bin Ibrahim bin Harith Al-Taimi (may Allah have mercy on him) that Nafi’, who had corresponded with Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyida Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), asked Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) about an issue: “I have given two divorces to my free wife.” So Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “She has become unlawful for you.”

It is narrated from Sulaiman bin Yasar (may Allah have mercy on him) that Nafi’, who had corresponded with Umm al-Mu’minin Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), was married to a free woman. He gave her two divorces, then wanted to take her back, so the purified wives of the Prophet ﷺ told him to ask ‘Uthman bin ‘Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) about it. He went to him and found him at the place of Darj, and he was holding the hand of Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him). He asked both of them, and they immediately replied: “She has become unlawful for you, she has become unlawful for you.”

It is narrated from Ibn Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) that Nafi', who had corresponded with Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), gave his free wife two divorces. Then he asked 'Uthman ibn 'Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) about the matter, so 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him that she has become unlawful for you.
