Muhammad bin Iyas bin Bukair narrated that a man gave his wife three divorces before consummation, then he planned to marry her again, so he came to ask about the issue and inquired from Abu Hurairah and Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them). They said: In our opinion, he cannot marry her until she marries another husband. The man said, "I intended only one divorce." Ibn Abbas said: You have used up all your (entire) right.

Ata bin Sayyar (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated that a man came and asked Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) about a man who gave his wife three divorces before consummation. Ata bin Sayyar (may Allah have mercy on him) says, I said, "For a virgin, only one will apply." So Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "You are a storyteller; one divorce will make her irrevocably separated, and three will make her unlawful for him until she marries another husband."

Muhammad bin Iyas bin Bukair narrated that a man gave his wife three divorces before consummation of marriage. Later, when he intended to marry that woman again, he came to ask about the ruling, so I accompanied him to inquire about the matter for him. Then he asked Abu Hurairah and Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) regarding this, so both of them said, "In our opinion, he cannot marry her until she marries another husband." The man said, "I had only given her one divorce." Upon this, Ibn Abbas said, "You have used up all your right." Imam Shafi’i (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Abu Hurairah and Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) did not consider it objectionable that he gave three divorces.

It is narrated from Ata bin Yasar that a man came to Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) to ask about the case of a man who had given his wife three divorces before consummation of marriage. Ata says, I said, "Indeed, in the case of a virgin, one (divorce) will be effective." So Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "One divorce will make her irrevocably separated, and three will make her unlawful for him until she marries another husband." Imam Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), when he was told that he had given three divorces, did not say, "You have done very badly" (i.e., he did not express anger at this action).

It is narrated from Ibn Abi Ayash that he was sitting with Abdullah bin Zubair and Asim bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) when Muhammad bin Iyas bin Bukair came to them and asked: "A man from among the desert dwellers has given his wife three divorces before consummating the marriage. What do you say about this?" Upon this, Ibn Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "We do not have any knowledge about this matter. You should go to Ibn Abbas and Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with them). I have found both of them present at Aisha's (may Allah be pleased with her) place. Ask them about the issue and then come back and inform us as well." He went and asked them, so Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him): "He has brought a serious matter to you, so give him a verdict!" Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "One divorce will make her irrevocably separated, and three will make her unlawful for him until she marries another husband." And Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) also said the same. Imam Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "These three companions and Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) did not dislike this."
