It is narrated from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) that the daughter of Muhammad bin Maslamah was married to Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him). Due to old age or some other reason, he began to dislike her. When he intended to divorce her, his wife said: "Do not divorce me, keep me with you and decide about my turn as you wish." Then Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "And if a woman fears indifference from her husband..." __QUR_N__

Ibn Abi Mulaika narrates that Aqil bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) married Fatimah bint Utbah. Fatimah said to him: "You stay with me and I will spend on you." Whenever he would come to her, she (Fatimah) would say: "Where are Utbah and Shaybah?" Upon hearing this, he would remain silent. One day, he entered the house feeling annoyed, and Fatimah said: "Where are Utbah bin Rabi'ah and Shaybah bin Rabi'ah?" Aqil (may Allah be pleased with him) angrily said: "When you enter Hell, they will be on your left side." (This statement was very hard on her) so she tied her clothes and went to Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) and related the whole matter to him. Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) sent Ibn Abbas and Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with them both) (to decide the matter). Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "I will surely separate them," and Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I will not allow separation between the two elders of Banu Abd Manaf." Ibn Abi Mulaika said that when both of them came to him, they found him extremely angry, then both of them reconciled between them.

It is narrated from Ubaidah (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding this verse: "If you fear a breach between them (the husband and wife), appoint two arbiters, one from his family and the other from hers" (An-Nisa: 35), that during the caliphate of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), a husband and wife came to him along with people from their respective families. Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered them to appoint one arbiter from the man's family and one from the woman's family. Then he (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the two arbiters: "Do you know what your task is? If you deem it appropriate, reconcile them, and if you wish, separate them." Upon hearing this, the woman said: "I am content with the decision of Allah's Book, whether it is reconciliation or separation," and the man said: "I do not accept separation." At this, Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah, you are lying; you must accept both options in the same way."
