Nafi’ (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: Whoever among the pilgrims reaches the night of sacrifice while staying at the mountains of ‘Arafah before the break of dawn, he has attained the Hajj. And whoever does not reach ‘Arafah, but stays there until before the break of dawn, his Hajj is missed. He should come to the House of Allah, perform seven circuits (Tawaf) around it, and perform Sa’i between Safa and Marwah for seven rounds. Then, if he wishes, he may shave his head or shorten his hair. And if he has a sacrificial animal, he should slaughter it before shaving his head. And when he has completed the Tawaf and Sa’i, he should shave or shorten his hair. Then he should return to his home. If in the coming year he attains Hajj and has the means, he should perform Hajj and also offer a sacrifice. If he cannot find a sacrificial animal, then in its place he should fast three days during the days of Hajj and seven when he returns home.

Sulaiman bin Yasar (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated that Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) set out for Hajj, and on the way to Makkah, at the place of Badiyah, his camel was lost. He came to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) on the day of sacrifice and informed him of this matter. So Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him, "Do as those performing ‘Umrah do, then come out of Ihram. Then, when you reach Hajj in the coming year, perform Hajj and offer as sacrifice whatever is available from the Hadi."
