It is narrated from Nafi' bin 'Abd al-Harith: He said, Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Makkah and on Friday entered Dar al-Nadwah. He intended to go to the mosque from nearby. He placed his cloak on something standing in the house. Then one of the pigeons came and sat on it. He shooed it away, and a snake pounced on it and killed it. After performing the Friday prayer, I and Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) came to him. He said: "Both of you decide about a matter I did today. I came to this house and intended to go to the mosque from nearby. I placed my cloak on that standing thing, and one of the pigeons came and sat on it. I was afraid it might soil it with its droppings, so I shooed it away. It went and sat on another standing thing, and a snake pounced on it and killed it. I became worried that I had driven it away from a place of safety, and it went and sat in a place where it was killed." Nafi' says, I said to Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him): "What do you think about the two-toothed goat, should we tell the Commander of the Faithful to pay its compensation?" He said: "That is also my opinion." Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered its compensation to be paid.

Ibn Jurayj said: I asked Ata, "Was it from the pigeons of Makkah?" He replied, "Yes."
