It is narrated from Urwah (may Allah have mercy on him) that the Prophet ﷺ passed by Dubaa’ah bint Zubair and said: “Do you not intend to perform Hajj?” She replied, “I am doubtful because of illness.” The Prophet ﷺ said to her: “Enter into the state of Ihram for Hajj and stipulate the condition that I will become free from Ihram wherever I am prevented (due to illness).”

It is narrated from Urwah who reports that Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said to me: "When you perform Hajj, do you make an exception (istithna)?" Urwah says: I asked, "What should I say?" Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Say, 'O Allah, I have intended Hajj and set out for it. If You make it easy for me, then it is Hajj, and if any obstacle prevents me, then it is Umrah.'"

It is narrated from Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) that he reports from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that during the time of turmoil, he set out towards Makkah for Umrah, and said: If I am prevented from reaching the House of Allah, we will do as we did with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). Imam Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said, meaning: We will become lawful (out of Ihram) in the same way as we became lawful with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) in the year of the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah.

If You make it easy for me, then it is Hajj, and if any obstacle prevents me, then it is Umrah."
