Hadith 799
It is narrated from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), who describes the Hajj of the Prophet ﷺ. He said: "We set out with the Prophet ﷺ, until when we were at the place of Baida, I looked ahead of me, to my right, to my left, and behind me, and I saw riders and pedestrians as far as the eye could see. Everyone wanted to complete this (Hajj), and everyone was striving to do as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was saying. We had no intention except for Hajj, nor did we know anything else, nor did we know about ‘Umrah (during the months of Hajj). When we were at Marwah after the Tawaf, the Prophet ﷺ said: 'O people! Whoever does not have a sacrificial animal with him should come out of Ihram, and let his Ihram for Hajj become an Ihram for ‘Umrah (i.e., the Tawaf and Sa’i have been done, and the acts of ‘Umrah are complete). If what I have come to know now had come to my knowledge earlier, I would not have brought the sacrificial animal.' So those who did not have a sacrificial animal came out of Ihram."

It is narrated from Asma bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both), she states: We set out with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) (for Hajj), so the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Whoever does not have a sacrificial animal should come out of the state of Ihram." And I did not have a sacrificial animal, so I came out of Ihram, and Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) had a sacrificial animal, so he did not come out of Ihram.

Hadith 801
Narrated from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she said: There were still five days left in Dhu al-Qi'dah when we set out with the Prophet (peace be upon him) with the intention of Hajj. When we were at Sarif or near it, the Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered that whoever did not have a sacrificial animal should turn his ihram (for Hajj) into an ihram for Umrah. And when we were in Mina, beef was brought to me. I asked, "What kind of meat is this?" It was said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) has offered a sacrifice on behalf of his wives." Yahya said: I narrated this hadith to Qasim bin Muhammad, and he said, "Umrah! By Allah, you have brought the hadith in its original form."

From another chain, the same hadith is narrated from Umrah and Qasim, just like the chain of Sufyan (may Allah have mercy on him), without any difference in meaning.

Hadith 803
Tawoos says that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ left Madinah, but he ﷺ did not mention Hajj or Umrah; rather, he was waiting for revelation. When he ﷺ was between Safa and Marwah, revelation came down at that time. So he ﷺ ordered those companions who had put on the Ihram (for Hajj) and did not have a sacrificial animal with them to make it Umrah instead. And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "If I had known earlier what I came to know later, I would not have brought the sacrificial animal. But I have stuck my hair (i.e., completed the rites) and brought the sacrificial animal, so now I cannot come out of Ihram without offering the sacrifice."

Suraqah bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up towards you ﷺ and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Decide for us as if we are a people who have just been born. Is this Umrah only for this year or forever?" You ﷺ said: "Rather, it is forever. Now Umrah during the (days of) Hajj has been included until the Day of Resurrection."

Tawoos said: (In Makkah) Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived from Yemen, so the Prophet ﷺ asked him: "With what intention did you put on Ihram?" One of Maysarah or Hisham bin Hujairah narrated from Tawoos that Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "With the Ihram of the Prophet ﷺ (i.e., with the same intention as you ﷺ did)," and the other said: "I am present with the Hajj of the Prophet ﷺ."

Hadith 804
It is narrated from Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both), he states that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) stayed in Madinah for nine years and did not perform Hajj. Then (in the tenth year) he announced among the people for Hajj. People began to come to Madinah to set out with him (ﷺ). The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) set out (for Hajj) and we also set out with him (ﷺ). We intended only Hajj and set out for that purpose alone. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was among us, and the Qur'an was being revealed to him (ﷺ), and he (ﷺ) knew its true meaning well, and he (ﷺ) acted as he was commanded. When we reached Makkah and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) performed the Tawaf of the House and the Sa'i between Safa and Marwah, he (ﷺ) said: "Whoever does not have a sacrificial animal should make it an 'Umrah, and if what I have come to know later had been known to me earlier, I would not have brought the sacrificial animal and would have made it an 'Umrah."

Hadith 805
Tawoos says that the Prophet ﷺ went out and he was not mentioning Hajj or Umrah by name, rather he was awaiting revelation. Tawoos said that when he ﷺ was making rounds between Safa and Marwah, revelation descended upon him. The Prophet ﷺ then ordered his companions, may Allah be pleased with them, that whoever among them had entered into Ihram for Hajj and did not have a sacrificial animal with him, should make it Umrah instead. Then he said: "If I had known beforehand what I came to know later, I would not have brought the sacrificial animal, but I have already stuck to my intention and brought the sacrificial animal with me, so it is not permissible for me to become lawful (exit Ihram) without offering the sacrifice." Then Suraqah bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, stood up towards the Prophet ﷺ and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Will you make a ruling about us as if we are a new people born today? Is this act of converting Hajj into Umrah specific to this year of ours, or is it permitted forever?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "It is permitted forever; Umrah has been included in the (days of) Hajj until the Day of Judgment." He said that Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, entered (Makkah) from Yemen, so the Prophet ﷺ asked: "With what intention did you enter into Ihram?" One of Ibn Tawoos or Ibrahim bin Maisarah said: "I entered into Ihram and recited the Talbiyah like the Ihram of the Prophet ﷺ," and the other said: "I recited the Talbiyah for Hajj like the Hajj of the Prophet ﷺ."

Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates from Lady Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: "O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)! What is the matter with the people that they have ended their ihram after performing ‘Umrah, but you have not ended your ihram after your ‘Umrah?" So the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "I have stuck my hair (with gum) and put a garland on my sacrificial animal, so I will not end my ihram until I have slaughtered my sacrifice."
