It is narrated from ‘Ata bin Yasar (may Allah have mercy on him) that a man kissed his wife while he was fasting, and this caused him great distress. He sent his wife to inquire about this matter. The woman went to Umm al-Mu’minin, Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), and asked her. Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) replied, “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to kiss (his wives) while fasting.” The woman returned and informed her husband, but this made him even more anxious. The man said, “We are not like the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), for Allah makes lawful for His Messenger whatever He wills.” The woman went again to Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) and found the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) present at her place. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) asked, “What is the matter with this woman?” Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) informed him, so he (ﷺ) said, “Did you not tell her that I do this?” Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said, “I did inform her, but when she went back to her husband, he became even more distressed and said, ‘We are not like the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), for Allah makes lawful for His Messenger whatever He wills.’” Upon hearing this, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) became angry and said, “By Allah! I am the most God-fearing among you and the most knowledgeable of Allah’s limits.”
