Hadith 584
أَخْبَرَنَا الشَّافِعِيُّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَقِيلٍ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ: أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَبَّرَ عَلَى الْمَيِّتِ أَرْبَعًا، وَقَرَأَ بِأُمِّ الْقُرْآنِ بَعْدَ التَّكْبِيرَةِ الْأُولَى.
It is narrated from Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said four takbirs over the deceased and recited Surah Al-Fatihah after the first takbir.
Hadith 585
أَخْبَرَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ وَرْدَانَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ: أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقْرَأُ بِأُمِّ الْقُرْآنِ بَعْدَ التَّكْبِيرَةِ الْأُولَى عَلَى الْجِنَازَةِ.
It is narrated from Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) that he used to recite Surah Al-Fatihah after the first Takbeer in the funeral prayer.
Hadith 586
أَخْبَرَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ طَلْحَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ قَالَ: صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَلَى جِنَازَةٍ، فَقَرَأَ بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ، فَلَمَّا سَلَّمَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ: سُنَّةٌ وَحَقٌّ.
Talha bin Abdullah bin Awf narrates that I offered the funeral prayer behind Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), and he recited Surah Al-Fatihah. When he finished with salam, I inquired about it, and he replied: "It is Sunnah and the truth."
Hadith 587
أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَجْلَانَ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ يَجْهَرُ بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ عَلَى الْجِنَازَةِ، يَقُولُ: إِنَّمَا فَعَلْتُ هَذَا لِتَعْلَمُوا أَنَّهَا سُنَّةٌ.
Saeed bin Abi Saeed narrates that I heard Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reciting Surah Al-Fatihah aloud over a funeral, and afterwards he said, "I did this so that you may know that this is Sunnah."
Hadith 588
أَخْبَرَنَا مُطَرِّفُ بْنُ مَازِنٍ، عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو أُمَامَةَ بْنُ سَهْلٍ: أَنَّهُ أَخْبَرَهُ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: أَنَّ السُّنَّةَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ عَلَى الْجِنَازَةِ أَنْ يُكُبِّرَ الْإِمَامُ، ثُمَّ يَقْرَأَ بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ بَعْدَ التَّكْبِيرَةِ الْأُولَى يَقْرَأُ فِي نَفْسِهِ ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَيُخْلِصُ الدُّعَاءَ لِلْجِنَازَةِ فِي التَّكْبِيرَاتِ لَا يَقْرَأُ فِي شَيْءٍ مِنْهُنَّ، ثُمَّ يُسَلِّمُ سِرًّا فِي نَفْسِهِ.
Abu Umamah bin Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that one of the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) informed him that the Sunnah in the funeral prayer is that the imam says the takbeer, then quietly recites Surah Al-Fatihah in his heart after the first takbeer, then sends blessings upon the Prophet (peace be upon him), and then sincerely supplicates for the deceased. In the remaining takbeers, he does not recite anything, and then quietly says the salam in his heart.
Hadith 589
أَخْبَرَنَا مُطَرِّفُ بْنُ مَازِنٍ، عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدٌ الْفِهْرِيُّ، عَنِ الضَّحَّاكِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ: أَنَّهُ قَالَ مِثْلَ قَوْلِ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ.
Through another chain, it is narrated from Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) in a manner similar to the statement of Dhahhak bin Qais (may Allah be pleased with him).
Hadith 590
أَخْبَرَنَا بَعْضُ أَصْحَابِنَا، عَنْ لَيْثِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ، قَالَ: السُّنَّةُ أَنْ يُقْرَأَ عَلَى الْجِنَازَةِ بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ.
Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Sunnah is to recite Surah Al-Fatihah in the funeral prayer.
Hadith 591
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ، يَعْنِي: الْوَاقِدِيَّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ حَفْصٍ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ: أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَرْفَعُ يَدَيْهِ كُلَّمَا كَبَّرَ عَلَى الْجِنَازَةِ.
It is narrated from Nafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) that Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to raise both his hands with every takbeer during the funeral prayer.
Hadith 592
أَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكٌ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ: أَنَّهُ كَانَ يُسَلِّمُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ عَلَى الْجِنَازَةِ.
It is narrated from Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) that Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) would also say salam at the end of the funeral prayer.
Hadith 593
قَالَ الشَّافِعِيُّ فِي كِتَابِهِ: أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ عُلَيَّةَ، عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ أَبِي هِنْدٍ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ فِي الصَّلَاةِ عَلَى الْجِنَازَةِ لَا وَقْتَ وَلَا عَدَدَ. أَخْرَجَ التِّسْعَةَ الْأَحَادِيثَ مِنْ كِتَابِ الْجَنَائِزِ وَالْعَاشِرَ مِنْ كِتَابِ اخْتِلَافِ عَلِيٍّ وَعَبْدِ اللَّهِ مِمَّا لَمْ يَسْمَعِ الرَّبِيعُ مِنَ الشَّافِعِيِّ.
It is narrated from Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that there is neither a fixed time for the funeral prayer nor a fixed number of "takbeers."
