It is narrated from Rifaa bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying: "When any of you stands for prayer, he should perform ablution as Allah has commanded him, then say the takbeer, and if he knows any Qur'an, he should recite from it, and if he does not know anything from the Qur'an, then he should praise Allah, and say Allahu Akbar and bow in rukoo' until he is at ease in rukoo', then stand up until he is at ease standing, then prostrate until he is at ease in prostration, then raise his head and sit until he is at ease sitting. Whoever falls short in this has indeed fallen short in his prayer."

It is narrated from Rifaa’ah bin Rafi’ (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man entered the mosque and began to pray near the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). (When he completed his prayer) he came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and greeted him with salam. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Repeat your prayer, for you have not prayed.” The man stood up and prayed in the same manner as before. The Prophet (ﷺ) again said: “Repeat your prayer, for you have not prayed.” He said: O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)! Teach me, how should I pray? The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “When you stand for prayer, face the qiblah and say Allahu Akbar, then recite Surah Al-Fatihah and whatever (portion) of the Qur’an Allah has made easy for you. When you bow (in ruku’), place your palms on your knees, perform your ruku’ with calmness, and straighten your back. When you rise, straighten your back and raise your head until the bones return to their joints. When you prostrate, prostrate with calmness, and when you rise, sit on your left thigh. Then perform every ruku’ and prostration with calmness in the same way.”

It is narrated from Nu'man bin Murrah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "What do you say about the drunkard, the adulterer, and the thief?" And this statement was before the revelation of the prescribed punishments for these crimes. The noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) said: Allah and His Messenger know best. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "These are evils and there is punishment for them, and the worst thief is the one who steals from the prayer." Then the hadith continues further.
