Hadith 201
أَخْبَرَنَا الشَّافِعِيُّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا مُسْلِمُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ، وَعَبْدُ الْمَجِيدِ وَغَيْرُهُمَا، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ عُقْبَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْفَضْلِ، عَنِ الْأَعْرَجِ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي رَافِعٍ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ: أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ: كَانَ إِذَا ابْتَدَأَ، وَقَالَ غَيْرُهُ مِنْهُمْ: كَانَ إِذَا افْتَتَحَ الصَّلَاةَ قَالَ: وَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِيَ لِلَّذِي فَطَرَ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ حَنِيفًا، وَمَا أَنَا مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ، إِنَّ صَلَاتِي وَنُسُكِي وَمَحْيَايَ وَمَمَاتِي للَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ، لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، وَبِذَلِكَ أُمِرْتُ. قَالَ أَكْثَرُهُمْ: وَأَنَا أَوَّلُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَشَكَكْتُ أَنْ يَقُولَ: قَالَ أَحَدُهُمْ: وَأَنَا مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ الْمَلِكُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ وَبِحَمْدِكَ أَنْتَ رَبِّي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ، ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي وَاعْتَرَفْتُ بِذَنْبِي فَاغْفِرْ لِي ذُنُوبِي جَمِيعًا إِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، وَاهْدِنِي لِأَحْسَنِ الْأَخْلَاقِ لَا يَهْدِينِي لِأَحْسَنِهَا إِلَّا أَنْتَ، وَاصْرِفْ عَنِّي سَيِّئَهَا لَا يَصْرِفُ عَنِّي سَيِّئَهَا إِلَّا أَنْتَ، لَبَّيْكَ وَسَعْدَيْكَ وَالْخَيْرُ بِيَدَيْكَ، وَالشَّرُّ لَيْسَ إِلَيْكَ، وَالْمَهْدِيُّ مَنْ هَدَيْتَ، أَنَا بِكَ وَإِلَيْكَ، لَا مَنْجَى مِنْكَ إِلَّا إِلَيْكَ تَبَارَكْتَ وَتَعَالَيْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ.
It is narrated from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would begin the prayer, he would recite: “I have turned my face in submission to the One who created the heavens and the earth, and I am not among the polytheists. Indeed, my prayer, my sacrifice, my life, and my death are for Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. He has no partner, and I have been commanded to this, and I am among those who submit. O Allah! You are the King, there is no deity except You, You are pure with Your praise, You are my Lord and I am Your servant. I have wronged myself and I confess my sins, so forgive all my sins, for none forgives sins except You. Guide me to good character, for none guides to good character except You, and turn away bad character from me, for none can turn it away except You. O Allah, here I am, and all goodness is in Your hands, and evil is not attributed to You. The one whom You guide is truly guided. I am with You and turn to You. There is no refuge except with You. You are blessed and You are exalted. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You.”
Hadith 202
أَخْبَرَنَا مُسْلِمُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ، وَعَبْدُ الْمَجِيدِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ عُقْبَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْفَضْلِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْأَعْرَجِ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي رَافِعٍ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ: أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ أَحَدُهُمَا: كَانَ إِذَا ابْتَدَأَ الصَّلَاةَ، وَقَالَ الْآخَرُ: كَانَ إِذَا افْتَتَحَ الصَّلَاةَ، قَالَ: وَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِيَ لِلَّذِي فَطَرَ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ حَنِيفًا، وَمَا أَنَا مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ، إِنَّ صَلَاتِي وَنُسُكِي وَمَحْيَايَ وَمَمَاتِي للَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ، لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَبِذَلِكَ أُمِرْتُ. قَالَ أَحَدُهُمَا: وَأَنَا أَوَّلُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، وَقَالَ الْآخَرُ: وَأَنَا مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ. قَالَ الشَّافِعِيُّ: ثُمَّ يَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ بِالتَّعَوُّذِ ثُمَّ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ فَإِذَا أَتَى عَلَيْهَا قَالَ: آمِينَ، وَيَقُولُ مَنْ خَلْفَهُ، إِنْ كَانَ إِمَامًا يَرْفَعُ صَوْتَهُ حَتَّى يَسْمَعَ مَنْ خَلْفَهُ إِذَا كَانَ مِمَّا يَجْهَرُ بِالْقِرَاءَةِ. أَخْرَجَ الْأَوَّلَ مِنْ كِتَابِ اسْتِقْبَالِ الْقِبْلَةِ وَالثَّانِيَ مِنْ كِتَابِ الْأَمَالِي.
It is narrated from Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would begin the prayer, he would recite: "I have turned my face towards Him who created the heavens and the earth, and I am not among the polytheists. Indeed, my prayer, my sacrifice, my life, and my death are for Allah, the Lord of the worlds. He has no partner, and I have been commanded to do this." Muslim bin Khalid and Abdul Majeed bin Abdul Aziz—one of them said: "And I am the first of the Muslims," while the other said: "And I am among the Muslims." Imam Shafi’i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Then he would recite the Ta’awwudh (A‘udhu billah), then recite the Qur’an, then recite Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Raheem. When he finished (Surah Al-Fatihah), he would say "Ameen," and his followers would also say "Ameen"! If he was the Imam, he would recite aloud in the audible prayers so that his followers would also hear his voice."
