It is narrated from Bara’ bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), when he started the prayer, he would raise his hands. Sufyan says: Then I came to Kufa and met Yazid bin Abi Ziyad, and I heard him narrate this hadith with the addition that “then he would not return them.” I thought that this was “prompted” to him. Sufyan says: I heard Yazid narrate it in this way, then later I heard him narrate it with this addition as well, that “then he would not raise his hands.” Rabi’ bin Sulayman al-Muradi says: Imam Shafi’i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sufyan (may Allah have mercy on him) considered Yazid to be mistaken in this hadith and said: It is as if he was prompted with this last phrase, which he adopted, and Sufyan (may Allah have mercy on him) did not consider Yazid to have a strong memory.
