Talhah bin Ubaidullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), asking about Islam. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “(Islam) is to perform five prayers in the day and night.” He said: “Is there any prayer obligatory upon me besides this?” The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “No, except if you offer voluntary prayers.”

Talhah bin Ubaidullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A Bedouin from among the people of Najd came whose hair was disheveled, and the buzzing of his voice could be heard but it was not understood what he was saying. Until he came near, then it became clear that he was asking about Islam. So the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “(Islam is) to perform five prayers in the day and night.” He said: “Is there any prayer obligatory upon me besides this?” The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “No, except that you offer voluntary prayers.” And the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) mentioned to him the fasting of Ramadan. He said: “Is there any other fasting obligatory upon me besides this?” The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “No, except that you observe voluntary fasts.” (The companion says) That man went back saying these words: “By Allah, I will neither add to this nor decrease from it.” The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “If he is truthful, he has succeeded.”
