It is narrated from Umm al-Mu'mineen Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ghusl after janabah, he would first wash his hands, then perform wudu as for prayer, then insert his fingers into the water and run them through the roots of his hair, then pour three handfuls of water over his head with his hands, and then pour water over his entire body.

It is narrated from Umm al-Mu'mineen Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) intended to perform ghusl after janabah, he would wash his hands before putting them into the vessel, then wash his private parts, then perform wudu as for prayer, then wet his hair with water, then pour three handfuls of water over his head.

Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (ﷺ) would pour three handfuls (of water) over his head when he was in a state of janabah.

It is narrated from Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: I asked, "O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)! I braid my hair, should I undo them when performing ghusl (ritual bath) after impurity?" He (ﷺ) replied: "No (there is no need to undo them), it is sufficient for you to pour three handfuls of water over your head, then pour water over the rest of your body, and you will be purified."
