Hadith 73

Urwah bin Mughirah narrates that Mughira bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) informed him that he participated in the Battle of Tabuk with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Mughira says: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to relieve himself before Fajr, and I was carrying a water vessel with him. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned, I began pouring water from the vessel over his hands. He ﷺ washed his hands three times, then washed his face, then tried to remove his cloak from his arms, but the sleeves of the cloak were tight, so he inserted his hands into the cloak and brought them out from underneath, and washed his arms up to and including the elbows, then performed ablution and wiped over his leather socks, then returned. Mughira says: I also turned back with him. We saw that the people were praying under the leadership of Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet ﷺ prayed one rak’ah with the congregation and the second rak’ah separately with the people. When Abdur Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) finished the prayer with salam, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up and completed his prayer. This incident worried the Muslims and they began to say “Subhan Allah” repeatedly. When the Prophet ﷺ completed the prayer, he turned to the companions and said: “You did well,” or he said, “You did right.” It was as if he ﷺ was encouraging them to pray on time.
