أَخْبَرَنَا الشَّافِعِيُّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الدَّرَاوَرْدِيُّ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ عُثْمَانَ، عَنْ أُمِّهِ ابْنَةِ حُسَيْنٍ: أَنَّ رَجُلًا شَهِدَ عِنْدَ عَلِيٍّ عَلَى رُؤْيَةِ هِلَالِ رَمَضَانَ، فَصَامَ وَأَحْسَبُهُ قَالَ: وَأَمَرَ النَّاسَ أَنْ يَصُومُوا. وَقَالَ: أَصُومُ يَوْمًا مِنْ شَعْبَانَ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ أَنْ أُفْطِرَ يَوْمًا مِنْ رَمَضَانَ. وَقَالَ الشَّافِعِيُّ بَعْدُ: لَا يَجُوزُ عَلَى رَمَضَانَ إِلَّا شَاهِدَانِ. أَخْرَجَهُ مِنْ كِتَابِ الصِّيَامِ.
It is narrated from Fatimah bint Husayn that a man testified before Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) about sighting the crescent of Ramadan on the first night, so he fasted, and according to my understanding, he said that he also ordered the people to fast. And he said: For me to fast one day of Sha'ban is more beloved than to miss one day of Ramadan. Imam Shafi’i (may Allah have mercy on him) later said: For fasting in Ramadan, the testimony of two men (regarding the sighting of the crescent) is necessary.
