It is narrated from Sa’ib bin Yazid (may Allah be pleased with him) that in the time of the Prophet ﷺ, Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them), the first call to Friday prayer (adhan) was given when the imam sat on the pulpit for the sermon. But when, in the time of Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), the number of people increased, he ordered a second adhan, so this adhan was given, and thus the practice continued. Ata (may Allah have mercy on him) denies that this (second adhan) was initiated by Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him); rather, he says that Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) was the first to do this. And better knowledge is with Allah alone.
