Hadith 311

Ubaid bin Umair Al-Laithi narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to lead the people in the morning prayer, and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) pronounced the takbeer. The Prophet ﷺ felt some relief, stood up, and came forward past the rows. Ubaid says that when Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) led the prayer, he would not turn to any side. When Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) sensed something behind him and realized that no one except the Messenger of Allah ﷺ could come to that place, he stepped back towards the row, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned him to his place. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat beside him, and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) remained standing, until when Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) finished the prayer, he said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I thought you had recovered, and this day belonged to the daughter of Kharijah. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) returned to his house, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat in his place at one side of the chamber, warning the people against tribulations. He ﷺ said: "People should not follow my example in every matter, for I declare lawful what Allah has made lawful in His Book, and I declare unlawful what Allah has made unlawful in His Book. O Fatimah! Daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, O Safiyyah! Aunt of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, act for what is with Allah, for surely I cannot avail you anything against Allah."
