Hadith 296

Ubaid bin Umair (may Allah have mercy on him) says: People gathered around Mecca. Ata (may Allah have mercy on him) says: In my opinion, they said: Here in the high valley at the time of Hajj. Ubaid says: When the time for prayer came, a man from the family of Abu Sa’ib, who was not eloquent in speech, stepped forward. Miswar bin Makhrama (may Allah be pleased with him) pushed him back and put someone else forward. This matter reached Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), but he did not ask Miswar (may Allah be pleased with him) about it until they came to Madinah. When they arrived in Madinah, he inquired about it. Miswar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “Look, O Commander of the Faithful! That man was not eloquent in speech and it was the season of Hajj. I feared that some pilgrims would hear his recitation and adopt his lack of eloquence (i.e., memorize it incorrectly).” So Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “Is that why you did it?” Miswar (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I said: “Yes.” So Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “You did the right thing.”
