Hadith 1786

It is narrated from Ubaidullah bin Abi Rafi’ (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent me, Zubair, and Miqdad (may Allah be pleased with them) and said: When you reach Rawdat Khakh (the name of a place), there you will find an old woman (riding a camel), she will have a letter with her. We set out, and our horses were swiftly carrying us until we reached that old woman. We said to her, “Take out the letter!” She said, “I have no letter.” We said to her again, “Take out the letter, or we will strip you of your clothes.” So she took out the letter from her hair braid, and we brought it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Its contents were: from Hatib bin Abi Balta’ah to some men among the polytheists of Makkah, informing them in that letter of some matters (secrets) of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked, “O Hatib! What is this?” He said, “Do not be hasty in judging me. My situation was that I chose to stay among the Quraysh, and I had no kinship with them, while the other Muhajirun with you have relatives among them, so (the people of Makkah) protect and support their relatives and property because of those ties. I had no kinship with the people of Makkah, so I wanted, since I had no kinship with them, to do them a favor (so that in return they would protect my relatives). By Allah! I did not do this out of doubt in my religion, nor out of being pleased with disbelief after Islam.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said (after hearing his words): “He has spoken the truth.” Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), allow me to strike the neck of this hypocrite.” But the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “He participated in the Battle of Badr (with the Muslims), and you do not know, Allah has looked upon the people of Badr and said: ‘Do whatever you wish, I have forgiven you.’” And then this verse was revealed: “O you who believe! Do not take My enemies and your enemies as friends, offering them love...” (Al-Mumtahanah: 1) __QUR_N__ __XREF_N__ __REF_N__
