It is narrated from Abdullah bin Muhairiz (may Allah have mercy on him), who was raised under the care of Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him) in his childhood due to being an orphan. When (Abu Mahdhurah) sent him to Syria, Abdullah bin Muhairiz (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I said to Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him): "O uncle! I am going towards Syria, and I fear that I may be asked about your call to prayer (adhan), so please explain the matter to me." Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Yes, I set out on a journey with a few people, we were on the road to Hunayn. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned (from the Battle of Hunayn) and we met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the way. At the encampment of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, his mu’adhdhin called the adhan for prayer, and we were averse to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. We began to imitate the mu’adhdhin loudly, mocking him. The Prophet ﷺ heard our voices and sent men towards us, who brought us before him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whose loud voice did I hear among you?' The whole group pointed towards me, and they were right. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept me and sent the rest away, and said: 'Stand and call the adhan for prayer!' I stood up, but my condition was such that I felt extreme dislike for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his command. I stood before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he himself taught me the adhan, saying: 'Say: ﴿Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar, Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah, Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah﴾.' Then he said: 'Raise your voice and say: ﴿Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah, Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah, Hayya 'ala-s-Salah, Hayya 'ala-s-Salah, Hayya 'ala-l-Falah, Hayya 'ala-l-Falah, Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illa Allah﴾.' When I completed the adhan, he called me and gave me a pouch in which there was some silver, then he placed his hand on Abu Mahdhurah’s head, then passed it over his face, then over his chest, then over his liver, then his hand reached Abu Mahdhurah’s navel, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'May Allah bless you and bestow blessings upon you.' (Abu Mahdhurah says) I said: 'Appoint me to give the adhan in Makkah.' So he ﷺ said: 'I have appointed you.' Whatever dislike I had for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ disappeared, and all of it turned into love for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I came to the governor of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, 'Attab bin Asid, and continued to call the adhan for prayer by the order of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Ibn Jurayj (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Everyone among the family of Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to me just as Ibn Muhairiz did. Imam Shafi’i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I found Ibrahim bin Abdul Aziz bin Abdul Malik bin Abi Mahdhurah giving the adhan in the same way as Ibn Muhairiz narrated, and I heard him narrate it from his father, and his father from Ibn Abi Muhairiz, and he from Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him), and he from the Prophet ﷺ, in the same meaning as is transmitted from Ibn Jurayj.
