Abu al-Junub al-Asadi narrated that a man from among the Muslims was brought to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) who had killed a man from among the Dhimmis. When the testimony was established against him, Ali ordered his execution. Then the brother of the slain man came and said: "I have forgiven him." Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Perhaps they have frightened or troubled you?" He replied: "No, but killing him will not bring my brother back. They have given me the blood money and I am satisfied." Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You know best. Yes, the blood of one whose protection is our responsibility is like our blood, and his blood money is like our blood money."
