Hadith 161

أَخْبَرَنَا الشَّافِعِيُّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ ابْنِ قَيْسٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ التَّيْمِيِّ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ قَيْسٍ، قَالَ: رَآنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَنَا أُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ بَعْدَ الصُّبْحِ، فَقَالَ: "مَا هَاتَانِ الرَّكْعَتَانِ يَا قَيْسُ؟" فَقُلْتُ: إِنِّي لَمْ أَكُنْ صَلَّيْتُ رَكْعَتَيِ الْفَجْرِ، فَسَكَتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ. أَخْرَجَهُ مِنَ الْجُزْءِ الثَّانِي مِنَ اخْتِلَافِ الْحَدِيثِ.
It is narrated from Qais (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saw me performing two rak‘ahs after the morning prayer and said: "O Qais, what are these two rak‘ahs?" (Qais says) I replied: I had not performed the two Sunnah rak‘ahs of Fajr. (Upon hearing this) the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) remained silent.
