Abdur Rahman bin Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Abdul Qari narrates that a man came to Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) from Abu Musa (Ash'ari) (may Allah be pleased with him). Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him about the condition of the people there, and he informed him. Then he asked: "Is there any news concerning distant regions?" The man said: "Yes, a man became apostate after accepting Islam." Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "What did you do with him?" He said: "We seized him and struck his neck." Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Why did you not imprison him for three days, and give him a loaf of bread each day, and urge him to repent? Perhaps he would have repented and accepted Allah's command." Then Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Allah! I was neither present there, nor am I pleased with this news, nor did I command it when it came to my knowledge."
