Hadith 1281

Muhammad bin ‘Abbad bin Ja‘far says that Mutlib bin Hantab (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated to me that he gave his wife a talaq-e-battah (irrevocable divorce), then he came to ‘Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) and presented this matter to him. He (‘Umar) said: “Why did you do this?” Mutlib says, I said: “I just did it,” and upon hearing this, ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this verse: “If they had done what they were advised to do, it would surely have been better for them and more strengthening.” (An-Nisa: 66). “Why did you do this?” He said: “I just did it.” Then he (‘Umar) said: “Keep your wife with you, indeed this is only one (divorce).”
