أَخْبَرَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَقِيلٍ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ طَلْحَةَ، عَنْ عَمِّهِ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ طَلْحَةَ، عَنْ أُمِّهِ حَمْنَةَ بِنْتِ جَحْشٍ، قَالَتْ: كُنْتُ أُسْتَحَاضُ حَيْضَةً كَثِيرَةً شَدِيدَةً، فَجِئْتُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَسْتَفْتِيهِ فَوَجَدْتُهُ فِي بَيْتِ أُخْتِي زَيْنَبَ. فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، إِنَّ لِي إِلَيْكَ حَاجَةً، وَإِنَّهُ لَحَدِيثٌ مَا مِنْهُ بُدٌّ، وَإِنَّهُ لَاَسْتَحْيِي مِنْهُ. قَالَ: "فَمَا هُوَ يَا هَنْتَاهْ" ؟ قَالَتْ: إِنِّي امْرَأَةٌ أُسْتَحَاضُ حَيْضَةً كَثِيرَةً شَدِيدَةً، فَمَا تَرَى فِيهَا، فَقَدْ مَنَعَتْنِي الصَّلَاةَ وَالصَّوْمَ؟ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: "إِنِّي أَنْعَتُ لَكِ الْكُرْسُفَ فَإِنَّهُ يُذْهِبُ الدَّمَ" ، قَالَتْ: هُوَ أَكْثَرُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ. قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: "فَتَلَجَّمِي" . قَالَتْ: هُوَ أَكْثَرُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ. قَالَ: "فَاتَّخِذِي ثَوْبًا" . قَالَتْ: هُوَ أَكْثَرُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ، إِنَّمَا أَثُجُّ ثَجًّا. فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: "سَآمُرُكِ بِأَمْرَيْنِ أَيَّهُمَا فَعَلْتِ أَجْزَأَكِ مِنَ الْآخَرِ، فَإِنْ قَوِيتِ عَلَيْهِمَا، فَأَنْتِ أَعْلَمُ" . قَالَ لَهَا: "إِنَّمَا هِيَ رَكْضَةٌ مِنْ رَكَضَاتِ الشَّيْطَانِ، فَتَحَيَّضِي سِتَّةَ أَيَّامٍ، أَوْ سَبْعَةً فِي عِلْمِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى، ثُمَّ اغْتَسِلِي حَتَّى إِذَا رَأَيْتِ أَنَّكِ قَدْ طَهُرْتِ وَاسْتَنْقَيْتِ فَصَلِّي أَرْبَعًا وَعِشْرِينَ لَيْلَةً وَأَيَّامَهَا، أَوْ ثَلَاثًا وَعِشْرِينَ لَيْلَةً وَأَيَّامَهَا، وَصُومِي، فَإِنَّهُ مُجْزِئُكِ، وَكَذَلِكَ افْعَلِي فِي كُلِّ شَهْرٍ كَمَا تَحِيضُ النِّسَاءُ، وَيَطْهُرْنَ مِيقَاتَ حَيْضِهِنَّ وَطُهْرِهِنَّ" .
Hamnah bint Jahsh narrates that I used to have excessive bleeding (istihada). I came to the Prophet ﷺ to seek a religious ruling and found him at the house of his sister Zainab. I said, “O Messenger of Allah! I have something to ask you, it is something that I must ask but I also feel shy.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “What is it?” Hamnah said, “I have a severe complaint of istihada. What do you say about it? Because of this affliction, I am unable to perform prayer and fasting.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “I suggest you use cotton, for it absorbs the blood.” She said, “It is more than that.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “Tie a cloth around yourself.” She said, “It is even more than that.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “Use a piece of cloth.” She said, “It is even more than that (i.e., it does not stop, it keeps flowing).” The Prophet ﷺ said, “I command you with two things; whichever you do is correct. And if you are able to do both, then you know best.” Then the Prophet ﷺ said, “This is one of the kicks of Satan. Relying on Allah’s knowledge, consider yourself menstruating for six or seven days, then perform ghusl (ritual bath), and when you think you have become pure (from menstruation), then pray and fast for twenty-four days and nights or twenty-three prayers, and do so every month as women do in their fixed times of menstruation and purity.”
