Sayyiduna Ibn Jubayr, may Allah be pleased with him, who was among the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), says that one day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) felt intense hunger and tied a stone to his stomach. Then he said: "Listen! How many souls there are who, in this world, eat and drink abundantly and live in luxury and comfort, but on the Day of Resurrection they will be hungry and naked. Listen! How many people there are who honor their own selves, while in reality they are humiliating them. Listen! How many people there are who humiliate their own selves, while (in reality) they are honoring them. Listen! How many there are who forcibly intrude into those things which Allah has granted to His Messenger as spoils (fay’), seeking luxury and comfort, while they have no share in them with Allah. Listen! Surely, the deeds of Paradise are surrounded by severe hardships. Listen! Surely, the deeds of Hell are surrounded by ease, pleasure, and desires. Listen! How many desires there are whose pleasure lasts but a moment, yet they become the cause of long-lasting sorrow."
