مَثَلُ الْمُنَافِقِ كَمَثَلِ الشَّاةِ الْعَائِرَةِ بَيْنَ الْغَنَمَيْنِ
The example of the hypocrite is like a stray sheep between two flocks
Hadith 1371
1371 - أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عُمَرُ الْبَزَّازُ، ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ الْجَوَّابِ، ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الْقَاضِي، ثنا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، ثنا حَمَّادٌ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «مَثَلُ الْمُنَافِقِ مَثَلُ الشَّاةِ الْعَائِرَةِ بَيْنَ الْغَنَمَيْنِ»
Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The example of a hypocrite is like a goat wandering confusedly between two flocks."
Hadith 1372
1372 - أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الطَّاهِرِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ الْمَوْصِلِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ عُمَرَ الدَّارَقُطْنِيُّ، ثنا ابْنُ مُبَشِّرٍ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ خَالِدِ بْنِ خِدَاشٍ الْمُهَلَّبِيُّ، ثنا سَلْمُ بْنُ قُتَيْبَةَ، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ حَاطِبٍ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: «مَثَلُ الْمُنَافِقِ كَمَثَلِ الشَّاةِ الْعَائِرَةِ بَيْنَ الْغَنَمَيْنِ، لَا تَدْرِي أَيُّهَمَا تَتْبَعُ»
Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: "The example of a hypocrite is like a goat wandering confusedly between two herds, not knowing which of the two to follow."
Hadith 1373
1373 - أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عُمَرَ الصَّفَّارُ، أبنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ جَامِعٍ قِرَاءَةً عَلَيْهِ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، قِرَاءَةً عَلَيْهِ، ثنا أَبُو النُّعْمَانِ، ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، رَفَعَهُ: «مَثَلُ الْمُنَافِقِ مَثَلُ الشَّاةِ الْعَائِرَةِ بَيْنَ الْقَطِيعَيْنِ»
Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated it as marfu‘: “The example of a hypocrite is like a goat wandering confusedly between two herds.”
Hadith 1374
1374 - نا نَصْرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ الْفَارِسِيُّ، لَفْظًا مِنْ كِتَابِهِ، أنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الصُّوفِيُّ، نا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، نا مُوسَى بْنُ خَاقَانَ، نا إِسْحَاقُ يَعْنِي الْأَزْرَقَ، نا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «مَثَلُ الْمُنَافِقِ مَثَلُ الشَّاةِ الْعَائِرَةِ تَعِيرُ إِلَى هَذِهِ مَرَّةً وَإِلَى هَذِهِ مَرَّةً، لَا تَدْرِي أَيُّهَمَا تَتْبَعُ»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The example of a hypocrite is like a goat wandering between two herds, sometimes running towards one herd (in search of a male goat for mating) and sometimes towards the other herd; it does not know which of the two it should follow."
