خَيْرُ الرُّفَقَاءِ أَرْبَعَةٌ
The best group of companions is four
Hadith 1236
1236 - أَخْبَرَنَا الْقَاضِي أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدُ الْكَرِيمِ بْنُ الْمُنْتَصِرِ، ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْبُخَارِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو حَاتِمٍ، مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ، ثنا حَامِدُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ، ثنا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ، ثنا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، ثنا أَبُو سَلَمَةَ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لِأَكْثَمَ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَوْنِ: «يَا أَكْثَمُ خَيْرُ الرُّفَقَاءِ أَرْبَعَةٌ، وَخَيْرُ الطَّلَائِعِ أَرْبَعَةُ مِائَةٍ، وَخَيْرُ الْجُيُوشِ أَرْبَعَةُ آلَافٍ» مُخْتَصَرٌ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that indeed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Aktham bin Abi Al-Junoon: "O Aktham! The best companions for a journey are four, and the best vanguard is of four hundred, and the best army is of four thousand."
Hadith 1237
1237 - أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ، عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الشَّافِعِيُّ، أبنا هِشَامُ بْنُ أَبِي خَلِيفَةَ الرُّعَيْنِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ الطَّحَاوِيُّ، ثنا فَهْدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ الْحِمَّانِيُّ، ثنا مِنْدَلٌ، وَحِبَّانُ، عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، عَنْ عُقَيْلٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «خَيْرُ الصَّحَابَةِ أَرْبَعَةٌ، وَخَيْرُ السَّرَايَا أَرْبَعُ مِائَةٍ، وَخَيْرُ الْجُيُوشِ أَرْبَعَةُ آلَافٍ، وَلَنْ يُؤْتَى اثْنَا عَشَرَ أَلْفًا مِنْ قِلَّةٍ»
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best companions are four, and the best group of fighters is four hundred, and the best army is four thousand, and an army of twelve thousand can never be defeated merely due to lack of numbers."
Hadith 1238
1238 - أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ الْأَصْبَهَانِيُّ، ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، وَذُو النُّونِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ قَالَا: ثنا الْعَسْكَرِيُّ، ثنا ابْنُ مَنِيعٍ، ثنا دَاوُدُ بْنُ رُشَيْدٍ، ثنا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الصَّنْعَانِيُّ، ثنا شَيْخٌ، مِنْ عَامِلَةٍ يُقَالُ لَهُ أَبُو سَلَمَةَ، وَقَالَ: وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بِشْرٍ، قَالَا: ثنا الزُّهْرِيُّ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لِأَكْثَمَ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَوْنِ: «يَا أَكْثَمُ، خَيْرُ الرُّفَقَاءِ أَرْبَعَةٌ، وَخَيْرُ الطَّلَائِعِ أَرْبَعُونَ، وَخَيْرُ السَّرَايَا أَرْبَعُ مِائَةٍ، وَخَيْرُ الْجُيُوشِ أَرْبَعَةُ آلَافٍ، وَلَنْ يُؤْتَى اثْنَا عَشَرَ أَلْفًا مِنْ قِلَّةٍ يَا أَكْثَمُ قَالَ» اغْزُ مَعَ غَيْرِ قَوْمِكَ يَحْسُنُ خُلُقُكَ، وَتَكَرَّمْ عَلَى رُفَقَائِكَ "
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that indeed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Aktham bin Abi al-Junoon: "O Aktham! The best number of companions for a journey is four, and the best vanguard is of forty, and the best fighting group is of four hundred, and the best army is of four thousand. And an army of twelve thousand cannot be defeated merely due to lack of numbers. O Aktham! If you perform jihad along with people other than your own tribe, your character will improve and you will become honorable in the eyes of your companions."
Hadith 1239
1239 - أنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ الْأَصْبَهَانِيُّ، نا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ السَّقَطِيُّ، وَذُو النُّونِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الصَّائِغُ قَالَا: نا أَبُو أَحْمَدَ الْعَسْكَرِيُّ، نا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدَانَ، نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، لُوَيْنٌ، نا حَبَّانُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، نا عُقَيْلٌ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «خَيْرُ الصَّحَابَةِ أَرْبَعَةٌ، وَخَيْرُ السَّرَايَا أَرْبَعُ مِائَةٍ، وَخَيْرُ الْجُيُوشِ أَرْبَعَةُ آلَافٍ، وَلَنْ يُهْزَمَ اثْنَا عَشَرَ أَلْفًا مِنْ قِلَّةٍ إِذَا صَبَرُوا وَصَدَّقُوا»
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best companions are four, and the best group of fighters is four hundred, and the best army is four thousand, and an army of twelve thousand can never be defeated merely due to small numbers as long as they remain patient and speak the truth."
