خَيْرُ الصَّدَقَةِ مَا كَانَ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى
The best charity is that given from surplus wealth
Hadith 1227
1227 - أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عُمَرَ الصَّفَّارُ، أبنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ جَامِعٍ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، ثنا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، ثنا عَمْرٌو، يَعْنِي ابْنَ عُثْمَانَ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ مُوسَى بْنَ طَلْحَةَ، يَذْكُرُ عَنْ حَكِيمِ بْنِ حِزَامٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «خَيْرُ الصَّدَقَةِ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى، وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى، وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ»
Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best charity is that after which a person remains self-sufficient, and the upper hand is better than the lower hand, and begin (charity and kindness) with those whom you support."
Hadith 1228
1228 - أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُوسَى السِّمْسَارُ بِدِمَشْقَ، ثنا أَبُو زَيْدٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ الْمَرْوَزِيُّ، أبنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ الْفَرَبْرِيُّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الْبُخَارِيُّ، ثنا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، ثنا وَهَيْبٌ، ثنا هِشَامٌ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ حَكِيمِ بْنِ حِزَامٍ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «الْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى، وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ، وَخَيْرُ الصَّدَقَةِ مَا كَانَ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى، وَمَنْ يَسْتَعْفِفْ يُعِفَّهُ اللَّهُ، وَمَنْ يَسْتَغْنِ يُغْنِهِ اللَّهُ»
Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: "The upper hand is better than the lower hand, and begin (charity and alms) with those whom you support, and the best charity is that after which a person remains self-sufficient. And whoever seeks to be saved, Allah will save him, and whoever seeks to be independent, Allah will make him independent."
Hadith 1229
1229 - وأنا مُنِيرُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ، نا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ الطَّرَائِفِيُّ، أنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْحَكَمِ، نا أَنَسُ بْنُ عِيَاضٍ، عَنْ هِشَامٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ حَكِيمِ بْنِ حِزَامٍ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «الْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى، وَلْيَبْدَأْ أَحَدُكُمْ بِمَنْ يَعُولُ، وَخَيْرُ الصَّدَقَةِ مَا كَانَ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى، وَمَنْ يَسْتَعْفِفْ يُعِفَّهُ اللَّهُ، وَمَنِ اسْتَغْنَى أَغْنَاهُ اللَّهُ»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The upper hand is better than the lower hand, and each of you should begin (charity and alms) with those whom he supports, and the best charity is that after which a person remains self-sufficient. Whoever seeks to be saved, Allah will save him, and whoever seeks to be independent, Allah will make him independent."
Hadith 1230
1230 - وأنا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَامِدِ بْنِ مَحْمُودِ بْنِ ثَرْثَالٍ، أنا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الْمَحَامِلِيُّ، نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ كَرَامَةَ، نا خَالِدٌ، نا سُلَيْمَانُ، حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ دِينَارٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ: قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «الْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى»
Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The upper hand is better than the lower hand."
Hadith 1231
1231 - أَنَاهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عُمَرَ، أنا حَمْزَةُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، نا النَّسَائِيُّ، أنا قُتَيْبَةُ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، مِثْلَ حَدِيثِ ابْنِ ثَرْثَالٍ
This hadith is also narrated in the same manner from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) through another chain of transmission.
Hadith 1232
1232 - أنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ، أنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ رَشِيقٍ، نا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، نا يَحْيَى بْنُ بُكَيْرٍ، حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ، عَنِ الْأَعْرَجِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «خَيْرُ الصَّدَقَةِ مَا تُصُدِّقَ بِهِ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى، وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى، وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that indeed the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The best charity is that which is given when a person is still wealthy after giving it, and the upper hand is better than the lower hand, and start (charity) with those whom you support."
