إِنَّمَا يَعْرِفُ الْفَضْلَ لِأَهْلِ الْفَضْلِ ذَوُو الْفَضْلِ
Only those of virtue recognize the virtue of the people of virtue
Hadith 1164
1164 - أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عُمَرَ، أبنا ابْنُ الْأَعْرَابِيِّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا الْغَلَابِيُّ، ثنا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ بَكَّارٍ الضَّبِّيُّ أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى الْأَنْصَارِيُّ، عَنْ عَمِّهِ ثُمَامَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، قَالَ: بَيْنَمَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ جَالِسٌ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ وَقَدْ أَطَافَ بِهِ أَصْحَابُهُ إِذْ أَقْبَلَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ، فَوَقَفَ فَسَلَّمَ، ثُمَّ نَظَرَ مَجْلِسًا يُشْبِهُهُ، فَنَظَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي وُجُوهِ أَصْحَابِهِ، أَيُّهُمْ يُوَسِّعُ لَهُ، وَكَانَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ جَالِسًا عَنْ يَمِينِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَتَزَحْزَحَ لَهُ عَنْ مَجْلِسِهِ وَقَالَ: هَهُنَا يَا أَبَا الْحَسَنِ، فَجَلَسَ بَيْنَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَبَيْنَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ، قَالَ أَنَسٌ: فَرَأَيْتُ السُّرُورَ فِي وَجْهِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ فَقَالَ: «يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ إِنَّمَا يَعْرِفُ الْفَضْلَ لِأَهْلِ الْفَضْلِ ذَوُو الْفَضْلِ»
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that once the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting in the mosque and his companions were surrounding him, when suddenly Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) came and stood, greeted with salam, and then began to look for a suitable place to sit. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began to look at the faces of his companions to see who would make space for him. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting to the right of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); he moved from his place and said, "Abu al-Hasan! Sit here." So he sat between the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I saw happiness on the face of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), then he turned towards Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "Abu Bakr! Only the people of virtue recognize the rank of those who possess virtue."
