Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d Sa’idi (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that Jibreel (peace be upon him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: “O Muhammad! Live as long as you wish, in the end you will have to die. Love whomever you wish, in the end you will have to part from them. And do whatever deeds you wish, in the end you will be recompensed for them.” Qadi Abu Abdullah Muhammad bin Salamah bin Ja’far bin Ali al-Qasai said: I found these additional words in these two hadiths: “Jibreel (peace be upon him) came and said: O Muhammad! (peace and blessings be upon him) Live as long as you wish, in the end you will have to die. Love whomever you wish, in the end you will have to part from them. And do whatever deeds you wish, in the end you will be recompensed for them.” Then he said: “O Muhammad! (peace and blessings be upon him) The honor of a believer is in his standing for prayer at night, and his dignity is in being independent of people.”
