ازْهَدْ فِي الدُّنْيَا يُحِبُّكَ اللَّهُ، وَازْهَدْ فِيمَا فِي أَيْدِي النَّاسِ يُحِبُّكَ النَّاسُ
Renounce the world and Allah will love you; renounce what is in people’s hands and people will love you
Hadith 643
643 - أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عُمَرَ التُّجِيبِيُّ، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ فِرَاسٍ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، ثنا أَبُو عُبَيْدٍ، ثنا خَالِدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ الثَّوْرِيُّ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ , عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَعَظَ رَجُلًا فَقَالَ: «ازْهَدْ فِي الدُّنْيَا يُحِبُّكَ اللَّهُ، وَازْهَدْ فِيمَا فِي أَيْدِي النَّاسِ يُحِبُّكَ النَّاسُ»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) that indeed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while advising a man said: “Renounce the world and Allah will love you, and be indifferent to what people possess and people will love you.”
