Hadith 599
Muhammad bin Abdur Rahman Quraishi (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that I was present with A’mash (may Allah have mercy on him) when someone said to him: Hasan bin ‘Ammarah (the governor) commits oppression. So he said: It is astonishing that an oppressive person is appointed to oppressive tasks; what else can be expected from an arrogant and oppressive person? Muhammad bin Abdur Rahman says that after this I went to Hasan bin ‘Ammarah and mentioned this to him. He sent a handkerchief and some clothes through a man as a gift to A’mash. The next day I went to A’mash a little early, thinking that before people arrived, I would speak to him. I again brought up the mention of Hasan bin ‘Ammarah, so A’mash said: Wonderful, wonderful, what can be said about Hasan bin ‘Ammarah? How many good deeds he does! So I said: Is this not the same person about whom you spoke yesterday? And today you are praising him, what is this? He replied: Leave these matters. Khaythamah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated to me from Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “It is natural that the heart inclines towards the one who does good, and the heart feels aversion towards the one who does evil.”
Hadith 600
Ismail bin Khayyat (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hasan bin Ammarah came to know that A’mash had made some inappropriate remarks about him, so Hasan bin Ammarah sent him some clothes. After that, A’mash adopted a praiseworthy attitude towards Hasan bin Ammarah. When he was asked about this change, that previously you used to criticize him and now you are praising him, he replied: Khaythamah narrated to me from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Indeed, it is a natural matter that hearts...” Ibn ‘Adi says: I have written this hadith as marfu’ only from this teacher; otherwise, this hadith is known from A’mash as mawquf.
