Ja'far bin Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, narrates from his father, and he from his grandfather, who said that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, Umar, and Abu Ubaidah, may Allah be pleased with them, gathered together and were discussing something. Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, said to them: "Come with us to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him." So when they presented themselves before the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, they said: "O Messenger of Allah! We have come to you to ask about something." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "If you wish, you may ask, and if you wish, I will myself tell you what you have come for." Then the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to them: "You have come to ask me about sustenance—where does it come from and how does it come? (Listen) Allah has decreed that He will surely provide sustenance to His believing servant from such a place where he would not even imagine." This hadith is brief.
