Hadiths 401 to 600
مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ فَرَأَى خَيْرًا مِنْهَا فَلْيُكَفِّرْ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ، ثُمَّ لِيَفْعَلَ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ
Whoever swears an oath and sees better than it, let him expiate his oath and do what is better

Hadith 514
514 - أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْبَزَّازُ، أبنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ جَامِعٍ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، قَالَ: ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ أَبِي الْمَوَّالِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ، زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهَا حَلَفَتْ فِي غُلَامٍ لَهَا اسْتَعْتَقَهَا فَقَالَتْ: لَا اسْتَعْتَقَهَا اللَّهُ مِنَ النَّارِ إِنْ أَعْتَقَتْهُ أَبَدًا، ثُمَّ مَكَثَتْ مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ فَقَالَتْ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ فَرَأَى خَيْرًا مِنْهَا فَلْيُكَفِّرْ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ، ثُمَّ لِيَفْعَلِ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ»
Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that she swore an oath regarding one of her slaves who had asked her for freedom, that Allah would never free him from Hell if she set him free. Then, for as long as Allah willed, she remained firm on her oath. Then she said: Subhan Allah! I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever swears an oath to do or not do something, then sees a better option, should offer expiation for his oath and then choose the better option."
Hadith 515
515 - أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ النَّحْوِيُّ، أبنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ، أنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ النَّسَائِيُّ، ثنا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ، عَنْ سُهَيْلٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ , عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ فَرَأَى الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ فَلْيُكَفِّرْ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَلْيَفْعَلْ»
Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever swears an oath regarding doing or not doing something, then sees a better option, he should offer expiation for his oath and choose the better option."
Hadith 516
516 - أنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عُمَرَ، أنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ جَامِعٍ، نا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، نا دَاوُدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الضَّبِّيُّ وَسَعِيدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ وَمُعَلَّى بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ، قَالُوا: أنا أَبُو الْأَحْوَصِ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أُذَيْنَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ فَرَأَى غَيْرَهَا خَيْرًا مِنْهَا فَلْيَأْتِ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ وَلْيُكَفِّرْ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ»
Abdur Rahman bin Udhainah, may Allah have mercy on him, narrates from his father that he said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever swears an oath regarding something and then sees a better alternative, he should choose the better alternative and offer expiation for his oath."
Hadith 517
517 - أنا أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ، خَلَفُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْمِصْرِيُّ أنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ الْوَرْدِ، أنا أَبُو يَزِيدَ يُوسُفُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الْقَرَاطِيسِيُّ أنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْحَكَمِ، عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ، عَنْ سُهَيْلِ بْنِ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ , عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ فَرَأَى خَيْرًا مِنْهَا فَلْيُكَفِّرْ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَلْيَفْعَلْ»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that indeed the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever swears an oath regarding something and then sees a better option, he should offer expiation for his oath and choose the better option."
Hadith 518
518 - أنا أَبُو يَعْقُوبَ بْنُ خُرَّزَاذَ، أنا أَبُو يَعْقُوبَ السَّعْتَرِيُّ، نا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، نا أَبِي، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، قَالَ: سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ عَدِيَّ بْنَ حَاتِمٍ فَحَلَفَ لَا يُعْطِيهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ: لَوْلَا أَنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ فَرَأَى غَيْرَهَا خَيْرًا مِنْهَا فَلْيُكَفِّرْ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَلْيَأْتِ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ» مَا أَعْطَيْتُكَ، ثُمَّ أَعْطَاهُ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that a man asked Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) for something, so he swore that he would not give it to him. Then he said: If I had not heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever swears an oath about something, then sees something better than it, let him offer expiation for his oath and do that which is better," I would never have given it to you. Then he gave it to him.
Hadith 519
519 - وَبِهِ نا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، نا يَحْيَى، نا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْأَخْنَسِ، نا عَمْرُو بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ فَرَأَى غَيْرَهَا خَيْرًا مِنْهَا وَلْيُكَفِّرْ يَمِينَهُ وَلْيَأْتِ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that indeed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever swears an oath regarding something, then sees a better alternative than it, he should offer expiation for his oath and choose the better alternative."
Hadith 520
520 - وَبِهِ، أنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى، نا الْمُعْتَمِرُ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ , عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «إِذَا حَلَفَ أَحَدُكُمْ عَلَى يَمِينٍ فَرَأَى غَيْرَهَا خَيْرًا مِنْهَا فَلْيُكَفِّرْ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَلْيَنْظُرِ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ فَلْيَأْتِهِ»
Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace be upon him) said: "When any one of you swears an oath regarding something, then sees a better alternative, he should pay the expiation for his oath and choose what is better."
Hadith 521
521 - وَبِهِ، أنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، نا عَفَّانُ، نا جَرِيرُ بْنُ حَازِمٍ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ الْحَسَنَ، نا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ سَمُرَةَ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «إِذَا حَلَفْتَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ فَكَفِّرْ عَنْ يَمِينِكِ ثُمَّ ائْتِ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ»
Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Samurah رضي الله عنه reports that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "When you swear an oath about something, then offer the expiation for your oath and choose the action which is better."
