مَنْ أُولِيَ مَعْرُوفًا فَلْيُكَافِئْ بِهِ فَإِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ فَلْيَذْكُرْهُ فَإِنْ ذَكَرَهُ فَقَدْ شَكَرَهُ
Whoever is shown kindness, let him repay it; if he cannot, let him mention it, for if he mentions it, he has thanked him

Hadith 487
487 - أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو سَعْدٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْمَالِينِيُّ وَصِلَةُ بْنُ الْمُؤَمَّلِ الْبَغْدَادِيُّ قَالَا: ثنا أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ أَيُّوبَ بْنِ مَاسِيُّ الْمَتُّوثِيُّ الْبَزَّارُ، بِبَغْدَادَ، ثنا أَبُو مُسْلِمٍ الْكَجِّيُّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ، ح وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ الْحَسَنُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ فِرَاسٍ، بِمَكَّةَ حَرَسَهَا اللَّهُ تَعَالَى أبنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَهْلٍ الْمَعْرُوفُ بِبُكَيْرٍ الْحَدَّادُ، ثنا أَبُو مُسْلِمٍ الْكَجِّيُّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ، ثنا ابْنُ أَبِي الْأَخْضَرِ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ , عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «مَنْ أُولِيَ مَعْرُوفًا فَلْيُكَافِئْ بِهِ فَإِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ فَلْيَذْكُرْهُ فَإِنْ ذَكَرَهُ فَقَدْ شَكَرَهُ، وَمَنْ تَشَبَّعَ بِمَا لَمْ يَكُنْ فَهُوَ كَلَابِسِ ثَوْبَيْ زُورٍ» وَفِي رِوَايَةِ الْمَالِينِيِّ وَابْنِ فِرَاسٍ: بِمَا لَمْ يَنَلْ
Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever is treated with kindness should repay it; if he is unable to do so, then he should mention (the kindness or the benefactor). If he mentions it, then indeed he has expressed gratitude for it. And whoever pretends and displays something which he does not possess, he is like one who wears a garment of falsehood." And in the narration of Malini and Ibn Kharras (may Allah have mercy on them) the words are: «بما لم ينل» (with something which he has not attained).
