مَنْ كَثُرَ كَلَامُهُ كَثُرَ سَقَطُهُ، وَمَنْ كَثُرَ سَقَطُهُ كَثُرَتْ ذُنُوبُهُ، وَمَنْ كَثُرَتْ ذُنُوبُهُ كَانَتِ النَّارُ أَوْلَى بِهِ
Whoever speaks much, errs much; whoever errs much, sins much; and whoever sins much, the Fire is more deserving of him

Hadith 372
372 - أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ الْوَرَّاقُ، قَدِمَ عَلَيْنَا مِنْ دِمَشْقَ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مَنْصُورٍ الْبَغْدَادِيُّ قِرَاءَةً عَلَيْهِ، وَأَنَا أَسْمَعُ، قَالَ: ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْمُطَّلِبِ الشَّيْبَانِيُّ بِالْكُوفَةِ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ الْأُشْنَانِيُّ الْمُقْرِئُ، ثنا عَبْدَةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحِيمِ، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْأَشْعَثَ صَاحِبُ الْفُضَيْلِ بْنِ عِيَاضٍ، ثنا عِيسَى بْنُ مُوسَى يَعْنِي غُنْجَارَ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ رَاشِدٍ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «مَنْ كَثُرَ كَلَامُهُ كَثُرَ سَقَطُهُ، وَمَنْ كَثُرَ سَقَطُهُ كَثُرَتْ ذُنُوبُهُ، وَمَنْ كَثُرَتْ ذُنُوبُهُ كَانَتِ النَّارُ أَوْلَى بِهِ، أَلَا فَمَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ فَلْيَقُلْ خَيْرًا أَوْ لِيَصْمُتْ»
Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever speaks much will make many mistakes, and whoever makes many mistakes will have many sins, and whoever has many sins is more deserving of the Hellfire. Listen! Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent.”
Hadith 373
373 - أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ الرَّقِّيُّ السَّاكِنُ، كَانَ بِتِنِّيسَ فِيمَا أَجَازَهُ لَنَا، نا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ الْحَدَّادُ، نا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ هُوَ ابْنُ الْعَيْزَرَانِ الْأُشْنَانِيُّ، نا عَبْدَةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحِيمِ، نا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْأَشْعَثَ صَاحِبُ الْفُضَيْلِ بْنِ عِيَاضٍ، حَدَّثَنِي عِيسَى بْنُ مُوسَى، ثنا عُمَرُ بْنُ رَاشِدٍ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «مَنْ كَثُرَ كَلَامُهُ كَثُرَ سَقَطُهُ، وَمَنْ كَثُرَ سَقَطُهُ كَثُرَتْ ذُنُوبُهُ، وَمَنْ كَثُرَتْ ذُنُوبُهُ كَانَ النَّارُ أَوْلَى بِهِ، وَمَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ فَلْيَقُلْ خَيْرًا أَوْ لِيَصْمُتْ»

Hadith 374
374 - أنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْحَارِثِيُّ، أنا أَبُو عَبَّادٍ، ذُو النُّونِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الصَّائِغُ التُّسْتَرِيُّ أنا أَبُو أَحْمَدَ الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ الْعَسْكَرِيُّ، نا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ، نا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَامِدٍ الْحَنَفِيُّ، نا عُبَيْدَةُ بْنُ شُبَيْلٍ الْحَنَفِيُّ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَجْلَانَ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «مَنْ كَثُرَ كَلَامُهُ كَثُرَ سَقَطُهُ، وَمَنْ كَثُرَ كَلَامُهُ كَثُرَ كَذِبُهُ، وَمَنْ كَثُرَ كَذِبُهُ كَثُرَتْ ذُنُوبُهُ، وَمَنْ كَثُرَتْ ذُنُوبُهُ كَانَ النَّارُ أَوْلَى بِهِ» قَالَ: أَبُو أَحْمَدَ: أَحْسَبُ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ وَهْمًا لِأَنَّ هَذَا الْكَلَامَ إِنَّمَا يُرْوَى عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ وَلَسْتُ أَحْفَظُهُ مُسْنَدًا عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَّا مِنْ هَذِهِ الْجِهَةِ، فَأَمَّا حَدِيثُ عُمَرَ فَحَدَّثَنَا بِهِ ابنُ دُرَيْدٍ، نا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ، نا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ نُصَيْرٍ، نا صَالِحٌ الْمُرِّيُّ، عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنِ الْأَحْنَفِ هُوَ ابْنُ قَيْسٍ قَالَ: قَالَ لِي عُمَرُ: يَا أَحْنَفُ، مَنْ كَثُرَ ضَحِكُهُ قَلَّتْ هَيْبَتُهُ، وَمَنْ فَرِحَ اسْتُخِفَّ بِهِ، وَمَنْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ عُرِفَ بِهِ، وَمَنْ كَثُرَ كَلَامُهُ كَثُرَ سَقَطُهُ، وَمَنْ كَثُرَ سَقَطُهُ قَلَّ حَيَاؤُهُ، وَمَنْ قَلَّ حَيَاؤُهُ قَلَّ وَرَعُهُ، وَمَنْ قَلَّ وَرَعُهُ مَاتَ فَلْتَةً "
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that indeed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever speaks much will make many mistakes, and whoever speaks much will lie much, and whoever lies much will have many sins, and whoever has many sins is most deserving of Hell.” Abu Ahmad said: I think this hadith is a mistake, because this statement is only narrated from Sayyiduna Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). I have memorized it from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) only with this chain. As for the narration of Umar, Ibn Durayd narrated it to us with his chain from Ahnaf ibn Qays, who said that Umar said to me: O Ahnaf! Whoever laughs much, his awe diminishes, and whoever jokes excessively is considered insignificant, and whoever is excessive in anything becomes known for it. And whoever speaks much, his mistakes are many, and whoever makes many mistakes, his modesty decreases, and whoever’s modesty decreases, his piety decreases, and whoever’s piety decreases, his heart dies and his death comes suddenly.
