مَا وَقَى الْمَرْءُ بِهِ عِرْضَهُ كُتِبَ لَهُ بِهِ صَدَقَةٌ
Whatever a person uses to protect his honor is written for him as charity
Hadith 94
94 - أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عُمَرَ النَّحَّاسُ، أبنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ جَامِعٍ السُّكَّرِيُّ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، ثنا الْمُعَلَّى بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ، ثنا عَبْدُ الْحَمِيدِ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْهِلَالِيُّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُنْكَدِرِ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «مَا أَنْفَقَ الرَّجُلُ عَلَى أَهْلِهِ وَنَفْسِهِ كُتِبَ لَهُ بِهِ صَدَقَةٌ، وَمَا وَقَى بِهِ الرَّجُلُ عِرْضَهُ كُتِبَ لَهُ بِهِ صَدَقَةٌ» فَقُلْتُ لِمُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ: وَمَا مَعْنَى مَا وَقَى بِهِ الرَّجُلُ عِرْضَهُ؟، قَالَ: أَنْ يُعْطِيَ الشَّاعِرَ أَوْ ذَا اللِّسَانِ الْمُتَّقَى
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with both of them) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whatever a man spends on his family and on himself, it is written for him as charity in return, and whatever a man spends to protect his honor, that too is written for him as charity in return.” I (Abdul Hamid) asked Muhammad bin Munkadir: “What is the meaning of ‘whatever a man spends to protect his honor’?” He said: It means that he gives something (to a poet or a foul-mouthed person) to protect himself from satire or insult.
Hadith 95
95 - وَأَخْبَرَنَا هِبَةُ اللَّهِ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْخَوْلَانِيُّ، أنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ بُنْدَارٍ الْقَاضِي، أبنا أَبُو عَرُوبَةَ، ثنا عَبْدَةُ الصَّفَّارُ، أَخْبَرَنِي زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ، ثنا مِسْوَرُ بْنُ الصَّلْتِ الْمَدَنِيُّ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «مَا وَقَى بِهِ الْمَرْءُ عِرْضَهُ كُتِبَ لَهُ بِهِ صَدَقَةٌ»
